Tradeskills in General
All tradeskills require patience, persistence and skill.

There are four general tradeskill schools Blacksmith, Outfitter, Jeweler, and Scholar.

All tradeskills are performed in three basic steps gathering the resources, processing the resources, and creating an item. I know this looks more complicated than it really is but trust me once you do it it’s not that difficult.

In a general tradeskill school each level you attain you will get 8 skill points added to your prime tradeskills and 7 skill points to resource gathering skill. For every 25 levels of tradeskills completed you gain the ability to harvest the next tier of resources in that tradeskill.

Also your primary statistics will increase as follows:

School Dexterity Focus Health Power Strength
Blacksmith 5 2 5 2 6
Outfitter 6 2 5 2 5
Jeweler 0 5 5 5 1
Scholar 2 6 5 5 2

But remember your increases in primary statistics are based on the highest value for that statistic of all adventuring and tradeskill schools.

Example:

School Dexterity Focus Health Power Strength
Mage 8 8 16 10 7
Blacksmith 5 2 5 2 6

A first level Mage/ first level Blacksmith strength increase would be 7 not 5. Since the Mage school gets 7 strength points per level.

A first level Mage/ second level Blacksmith strength increase would be 10 not 7. Since the Blacksmith school gets 5 strength points per level.

Prestige Schools
Once a player meets the requirements in a school they have the option to join a prestige school for that school. For the Scholar school this is either Alchemist or the Spell Crafter. Much has yet to be uncovered in the course of the beta testing about these prestige classes, but more information will be forthcoming.

With prestige tradeskill schools each level attained you will get 10 tradeskill points added to your prime skills and 9 tradeskill points in resource gathering. For each 20 levels of a tradeskill completed you gain the ability to harvest the next tier of resources in that tradeskill. So a Scholar could harvest Slate (R) instead of Sandstone (R) at level 25, while a Spell crafter (Scholar Prestige Class) could do so at level 20.

Tools of the trade
Every trade skill requires three things resources, tools, and machines. Resources are items that are gathered from resource nodes. Tools are items that you as a player carry and serve two purposes, to harvest materials, or to interact with the machines. Machines are stationary devices that can normally be found close to most tier one resource harvesting areas.

Advanced Tools
Your training tools are useful, but they limit the amount of skill you can use when gathering and creating items to 40. You will need to upgrade your tools before sixth level (Remember each level you attain you will get 8 skill points added to your prime tradeskills and 7 skill points to resource gathering). Advanced tools can have techniques added to further improve your skill at the various aspects of trade mastery. Higher tier resources require upgraded tools.

Example: Quarrying techniques can be applied to a pickaxe, Stone working techniques to a chisel, Spell crafting techniques to a stylus and Essence Harvesting techniques to a siphon.

In tier one Spell crafting the Rune Stylus (T), Mining Pick (T), and the Stone Chisel (T) are made from bronze while the Essence Siphon (T) and Essence Shaper (T) are made from sandstone.

Gathering Resources
The resource nodes can be found at points as SRN or as MRN. Some SRN have multiple resources (example: Cedar trees – Cedar Bark/Cedar logs) but MRN in general have resources harvested while the MRN is alive and resources harvested after it has been killed (example: Dim Wisps - Essence/Tainted essence).

A Cedar Tree is a good example of a SRN while creatures like a Dim Wisps would be a good example of a MRN.

The gathering process – Target the node, have the appropriate tool in your hand, and then start the gathering sequence (Left click on the gather button on your action bar or press the appropriate key that you pre select in your options). This will gather the appropriate resource into your inventory and continue to gather resources from this node until it is either depleted or you run out of inventory space.

Some nodes do regenerate resources Cedar Trees will grow bark Dim wisps will regain essence. But they do it *very* slowly, so removing them to force a re-spawn is currently the best bet.

Creating Processed Resources and Items
After gathering the proper resources you will want to process them into processed resources or items. Go to a machine target it and start the item creation sequence (Left click on the create button on your action bar or press the appropriate key that you pre select in your options). A menu will pop up showing all the formulas you have scribed for you to select from.

Don’t worry if you selected the wrong machine, formula, or have the wrong tool in you hand when the machine batch creation window appears it will show you what is required to create the item from the formula you selected. You can also change the formula you selected at this time.

At the machine batch creation window it will show you the minimum tradeskill level, amount of resources, tool, and machine necessary for any formula to a create processed resource or item.

But you must have the formula scribed, the required resources in your inventory, the proper tool in your hand, and use the appropriate machine in order to process the raw materials.

Gathering raw materials will only get you raw materials. But processing raw materials and creating items gives you tradeskill experience in your current tradeskill. You will get more experience if it is related to your current tradeskill.

Example:

A Blacksmith that processes “Unprocessed Flax” into “Flax Spools” gets less experience than an Outfitter.

If the Blacksmith were to then create a “Beginners Flaxen Belt” from the “Flax Spools” they would again get less experience than an Outfitter.

But you would get some experience for both processing the flax and creating the item.

Spellcrafting or How to Gather Resources From a MRN
So you want to create spell formula for your friends. Maybe you want to make some cash by having the Consigner sell some of the spells you have scribed. For quick cash (or when everyone seems to have the spells you have) you can sell the spells to the Pawnbroker. Maybe you just don’t want to loose money buying a spell but want the spell. If your tradeskill is high enough you could buy the spell make a copy and resell the spell formula. Maybe even make a little profit.

Well here is how you make them.

First you will have to have joined the Scholar school and received your tools and scribed your basic formulas. The three best ways to gain experience in the scholar school are...

Sandstone Spell Shards (R) - Gathering raw Sandstone (R) to create Sandstone Spell Shards (R) required for spell crafting. Unlike the other schools, the machines necessary to make Sandstone Spell Shards (R) can only be found near the resource nodes, so take your Stone Chisel (T) along with your Pickaxe (T) when you head out to the quarry. Remember you Quarry stone and you Mine ore, you’re looking for the quarry not the mines! Look for the large stone markers outside of town for directions.

Essence Shaping - All spellcrafting currently require Essence Orbs (R) or Tainted Essence Orbs (R). To apply techniques when creating items all schools use Dim Essence (R) and Tainted Dim Essence (R). Dim Essence (R) come from live Dim Wisps Tainted Dim Essence (R) come from dead Dim Wisps. You can gather both types from the same Dim Wisp MRN. Dim Wisps can usually be found around the Essence Channeler (M) so remember to take your Essence Siphon (T) with you. You can find Essence Channelers (M) outside the cities of Dalimond, Kion, and Kirasanct.

Scribing Formulas - This is the process by which the spell is transcribed onto the rune. This is done at most scholar trainers you will need your Rune Stylus (T).

Currently no techniques can be applied to the spells and they are tiered as follows:

Basic Spells -> Improved Spells -> Tier 2 basic -> Tier 2 improved.

Tainted Essence Orbs are not needed for tier 1-spell formulas, but will be needed in later tiers.

(1) Sandstone Spell Shards

Formulas Needed: Beginning Stone Bricks and Beginning Blank Stone Rune.

The first step to create a spell formula is to target a sandstone node and start the gathering process using the Pickaxe (T) to gather some Sandstone Slabs (R).

Next go to a Stone Cutting Bench (M) and using a Stone Chisel (T) we perform the item creation sequence creating a Sandstone bricks (R) from the Sandstone Slabs (R).

Processing Sandstone Bricks (R) into Sandstone Slabs (R) will give you tradeskill experience.

Now over to the Stone Working Bench (M) and still using the Stone Chisel (T) turn those Sandstone Bricks (R) into Sandstone Spell Shards (R).

Processing Sandstone Slabs (R) into Sandstone Spell Shards (R) will give you tradeskill experience.

(2) Essence Shaping

Formulas Needed: Beginning Essence Orbs.

The first step is to find a live Dim Wisp (MRN) and using an Essence Siphon (T) start the gathering process for Dim Essence (R).

Once you find a Dim Wisp you need target it. Then you need to get close enough to start the gathering process. When you are close enough the Dim Wisp will stop and you can gather the essences from it. You may need to move after the first attempt to where the Dim Wisp finally stops.

Tainted Essence (R) is gathered from dead Dim Wisps. (At the moment kill the wisps, as they don't seem to recharge or disappear after you have taken their essence)

You then need to take the essences to an Essence Channeler (M) and using an Essence Shaper (T) perform the item creation sequence creating Essence Orbs (R) or Tainted Essence Orbs (R).

Processing Dim Essence (R) and Dim Essence (R) into orbs will give you tradeskill experience.

Techniques and some spell formula will use the Essence Orbs (R) and Tainted Essence Orbs (R).

(3) Scribing Formulas

The Cedar Desk (M) is usually found near the scholar trainer (for higher level spells you may need access to a higher quality desk). This is where the Sandstone Spell Shards (R) that you made earlier are used. Target the scribing desk, Have your Rune Stylus (T) in your hand, select the spell you wish to scribe from your formula list and if you have the relevant skills you will be able to use the create item process to create the required spell formula.

Scribing spell formula from Sandstone Spell Shards (R) will give you tradeskill experience.
